Five Water Whys

Thirsty? Drink water. Hungry? Drink water. Headache? Drink water. Sore muscles? Drink—and soak in—water.

Our bodies are about sixty-five percent water (if you weigh 200 pounds, everything thatisn’t water weighs just 70 pounds). So why would you need more of it? Because water helps us breathe; it regulates our metabolism and our temperature, and it helps us digest our foods. And since we lose water—just like the planet, which is 70% water—regularly, we have to replace it.

A few myths have helped propel water to its status of healing elixir over the past few years. Debates continue over how much water we need daily (some say about eight glasses or 64 ounces a day) and whether it actually helps clear skin or flush toxins. But why muddy those cool, clear waters? We have plenty of reasons to raise the glass.

Water fills you up.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between hunger and thirst, so quench before you quell. If your hunger pangs are quashed, you can save that meal you would have eaten, for later. And if you drink a full glass of water about ten minutes before a meal, you’re likely to be satisfied sooner and eat less.

Water is healthy.

Though it’s the main ingredient in tea, soda, coffee, and, often, juice drinks, those other ingredients sometimes reduce the benefits of water. Tea, coffee, and sodas that contain caffeine might not be an ideal choice in large quantities or for nighttime refreshment, and juice provides a lot of calories but virtually none of the necessary fiber from fruit. Water hydrates the body better than any other beverage!

Water cools you off.

Whether we are hot from exercise, the weather, or a stuffy room, water that is colder than we are will taste refreshing, but the real benefit is that it allows us to perspire, which cools our bodies.
