The Girl I Knew I’d Be
Since third grade, Sarah struggled with her weight, and her dream, over the last 10 years, was being an athletic, confident girl. She told herself that she carried the weight well, but she was not convincing; her self-esteem suffered as a result of her weight.
And who knows how long she’d have languished there were it not for a tragedy. In February 2012, Sarah lost her father and was thrown into a deep depression. That self-examination led her to the realization that she would have to change her life. And since her father had always pushed her to be active and lose weight, she decided to honor his life by joining Take Shape For Life. “I haven’t been the same!”
Obesity has its challenges, but being an obese child is a battle. “Some of [my] peers were relentless when it came to mocking my weight,” she says. Her great sense of humor helped her save face outwardly, but turmoil bubbled inside. She missed a lot of the important parts of a young girl’s life. “I was never asked to a dance, and I certainly couldn’t keep up physically to join cheer[leading]. Her weight was holding her back from being the person she knew she could be.
Each time she decided to commit to weight loss on one program or another, including a few she’d made up, Sarah would last about two weeks. The Medifast 5 & 1 Plan changed all that. Between the food plan and her Health Coach’s advice, she was able to lose 85 pounds.
“Every morning when I got on the scale, I couldn’t believe my eyes! I was actually doing it! I was losing weight not only the healthy way, but in a way that I could manage easily. I was enjoying the food, and, even more, I was enjoying losing the weight!”
During her journey, Sarah had some moments when her confidence was flagging, but her Health Coach would give her an encouraging shout-out on Facebook or increase her motivation with helpful tips, and she’d get her focus back. “That amazing feedback reminded me why I started TSFL in the first place. I couldn’t have done it without her!”
Her life has changed completely. She’s gone from being a shy, self-conscious, depressed girl to being a confident, beautiful woman. “The only person anyone has ever known, even myself, is the ‘fat’ me. My family especially is blown away by my transformation and incredibly proud of me.”
“I am a new, better me that I always knew I could be—but never thought I would be. I never knew the amount of determination and strength I had [before]. …I am now the girl I always dreamed of being as a little girl.”
